Time for a bit of an update on my painting for this year. I’ve painted a lot of terrain for Broadsides (you can see much of it here), but I haven’t painted much in the way of figures and so haven’t made much progress on my target for the year, however I have been trying to improve my painting so here are some shots of what I have painted this year:
It’s taken me a while and to be honest they’ve been done for a while now, but 8 Mercenary Sea Dogs for Warmachine are now done. Those of you who know your Sea Dogs from Privateer Press may notice a couple of none PP figures in the picture, these are there to bulk the unit out.
I did take a while to decide on the basing as well and decided to go with a sand base with a Reed/Wheat tuft. Must admit afterwards I wished I gone with the greener gress tufts as the reed ones have blended into the sand base. Still there are some more pirates somewhere to be finished off.
State of Challenge:
- Days down = 82
- Figures complete = 62
Starting to get rather badly behind, I hadn’t noticed the time slipping past. Need to crack on with some more figures (and a better photo next time I promise).
Slow progress has been made since the last post on the 9th February, yes that’s three weeks ago! Too many real-life things have slowed me down and meant time away from the painting bench. We’ve put the house on the market now and I guess that means more time away from the painting bench. Still I managed to find the time to complete 11 more figures, so here I present the latest batch to reach the completed stage.
Half-jacks, mine counters and two version of Victoria Haley (epic and non-epic). I only seem to have two half-jack and two mine counters, guess I never had the third one, those wondering where Darius is, well he’s still in some bits.
Continued with the Cygnar feel I present four warjacks, that should give all those warcasters I’ve painted something to command. Only pity is, is that they are all light warjacks. I present a Grenadier, Sentinel, Lancer and Hunter.
My final figure for this batch looks like he would fit in with the Cygnar troops, but is a Grundback Gunner for the Mercenary faction of Warmachine.
State of Challenge:
- Days down = 59
- Figures complete = 54
Not too badly behind in the count rate, but I need a few good weeks wo make up the gap.
More figures completed this week, although varnishing tomorrow afternoon as long as the weather holds.
First up we have 6 Cygnar Trenchers with their rifles ready and armed to fight.
Next up is a trencher chain gun crew, Captain Maxwell Finn and finally Commander Adept Nemo.
My Cygnar army is making good progress, although I think I need to undercoat the next batch and find some more warjacks as the army seems to have a number of warcasters, but currently only two warjacks.
Finally for my painting this week I present two fo the figures I dug out the week before which I started on and am now quite happy with. For the game Dark Age I present two of the Forsaken Firestorms, lots of flesh on these figures….
That’s 12 figures completed in the last week, which is a record so far this year, I doubt I’ll beat it.
State of Challenge:
- Days down = 40
- Figures complete = 43
A slight lead on the one figure per day, but I have nothing on the table for this week yet and I’m away for a few days at the weekend.
Some more warmachine figures have been completed this week. More work on some of these than others. I’d started on the Ironclad and the Journeyman Warcaster, but hadn’t finished them. The Gun Mage Captain Adept have been painted by John, but he had received a knock on his hand and had never been based. The Sentinel, Major Marcus Brisbane and Thor Steinhammer have been painted from undercoat upwards. So that’s 6 figures down this week ,those with a good memory will remember me talking about 9 figures waiting to be painted unfortunately those other three haven’t really made much progress, so I’ll keep them on the table and drop some paint onto them as I use the colours. I’ve got into a desire to finish off my Cygnar (wonder how long that will last!).
State of Challenge:
- Days down = 32
- Figures complete = 31
Behind by one figure, buts let see how this week goes.
Some more figures finished off this week, all varnished (including last weeks batch) this afternoon. A little bit of gloss varnish over the top on the gems to make them stand out a bit more. So I present a unit of 10 Cygnar Swordknights:
These had mostly been painted and needed tidying up and improving (my skills in painting have improved from when I started these guys) and one has been painted from undercoat (I’m not sure I can spot which one now even with the figures in front of me. 9 of these had a black base coat on them and the tenth one has a white basecoat (I’ll bring them along one Friday and see if anyone else can spot the odd one out.
Whilst I was finishing the swordknights I also grabbed a couple of small bits of terrain that needed finishing off, so here we have some barrels:
On the right is a stack of Hirst Arts wooden barrels and on the left are some plastic GW barrels, both now ready for the board.
State of Challenge:
- Days down = 25
- Figures complete = 25
Looks like I’ve caught up for now, with 9 figures sitting ready for the next week.
Whoops I haven’t posted about a game since 10th January, how did that happen.
Let’s try and catch-up with my gaming so far this year.
- 17th January – Bolt Action vs David – Lost
- 7th February – Bolt Action vs Darryl – Won
- 14th February – Bolt Action vs Dan – Won
- 21st February – Flames of War: Tour of Duty vs David – Won
- 28th February – Star Trek: Attack Wing vs Darryl – Won 3 games
- 7th March – Warmachine/Hordes vs Joseph – Lost
- 14th March – Bolt Action vs Darryl – Lost
- 21st March – Deadzone vs James – Lost
A few missed Friday’s in there, but some great games, even one’s I lost.
I had intended to write more yesterday however I spent too long with the pressure washer cleaning the block paving and my wrist didn’t like typing.
Anyhow “Fully Painted” I’m sure those of you who move around different forums have seen these little things in peoples signatures that are a “Countdown to fully painted”, finishing off the Retribution figures (well apart from one) got me thinking about that concept. The ideal of being fully painted sounds good, after all it does look much more impressive at a tournament to see an entire army set out on the table that is fully painted then the one in silver/white/black camo pattern does. So I thought about doing a countdown to fully painted myself, and then realised that I’ve been purchasing miniatures at a faster rate than I’ve been painting them! Ok so I’m not planning on cutting down further than I have already after all a budget is only good for one thing. Basically I need to find time to do more painting then, so how about a countdown – well I have three lists on here, Operation Orboros (still going), Uncharted Seas and Warzone – Capitol, and none of those are completed. Writing out the lists of figures that are still awaiting painting will take me longer than painting most of them (although having a list of figures might be good for insurance purposes!), I think I’ll stick to painting them.
Countdown to fully painted – not enough time to bother!
Well almost. My entire collection of Retribution celebrated the Easter Holiday by finally being finished off and put away.
So for the first game in the shed of for me this year I played Warmachine against Mike’s Mercenary army. I field Dawnlord Vyros with units of Invitors and Sentinels alongside a Chimera and a Phoenix, a single ghostsniper rounded out the points. Mike fielded Durgen with a Blaster and Wrockhammer supported by Thor Steinhammer and a basher for Infantry he went with Alexia and the risen and Cyennor and the Nyss Archers, all of this was supported by Dougal, Herne and Jonne and Reinholdt.
The massive AOE attacks available from the core of that army destroyed most of my Sentinels and left Vyros looking particularly unhealthy. The Invictors managed to hold up the Basher and the Nyss. Unfortunately I made one particular mistake with the army I failed to charge Durgen with the Holy Avengered Phoenix!
